Weather can significantly impact a road trip with kids, so preparing for varying conditions is essential. Start by checking the weather forecast for your entire route and any planned stops. Pack clothing suitable for different climates, including layers that can be easily added or removed. We like our merino wool base layers from Chasing Windmills. They are temperature-regulating, breathable, quick-drying base layer. They also double as pajamas! Rain gear, such as waterproof jackets and boots, is also a must, as is sun protection like these hats from Sunday Afternoon. Our kids have had the same hat for almost 7 years!

Sometimes, you need to just let them play in the rain though! Go to a park, jump in puddles, get soaking wet and then dry off and warm up in your van!

Additionally, consider alternative activities in case outdoor plans are disrupted by adverse weather. Indoor attractions, such as museums or aquariums, can provide a fun and educational experience when outdoor adventures with kids are postponed. We also spend those super cold days and even some super hot days in the van playing cards, drawing, reading and telling stories.
