7 Things to Consider Before Buying a Campervan

Navigating the world of campervans can feel like deciphering hieroglyphics in an ancient cave painting. Fear not, the team here at Axis not only designs and builds beautiful long lasting rugged vans, but we are also van owners and more importantly use our vans every day! These are a few key topics you may want to consider and research before buying your first campervan.

1. Choosing a Platform

Selecting a campervan chassis is akin to choosing a trusty steed – reliability is key. There are a few heavy hitters when it comes to the campervan conversion world and many have been around for quite some time. Ford, Mercedes and Dodge are the big three. Each brand has its pros and cons such as cost of ownership, durability, safety, and interior and exterior features. At Axis we choose to build primarily on the AWD Ford Transit cargo 148” wheel base, long body. Why do we love the Transit? One of the biggest reasons is the cost of ownership and reliability. This rig won't demand an arm and a leg for maintenance or a lengthy stay at the repair shop. It can fit nicely in a parking lot and the school pick up line. It also still fits a full sheet of plywood. :)

2. Custom, Semi-Custom or Mass- Produced Build

This decision may depend on your timeframe of van ownership. Custom builders can sometimes have years of wait time to get your van built out since each van is entirely different than the last. Our shop is considered semi-custom since you get to pick from 2 layouts but you’ll have your pick of accessories to really make the van your own. There are companies out there like Jayco, Thor and Winnebago that have ready to go, mass produced campervans with lots of bells and whistles, but you usually are going to forego craftsmanship, durability and the opportunity to customize your build to meet your specific needs. We know for a fact those big companies cranking out vans are not including bamboo ceilings, dovetail drawers and additional reading lights right where you need them most.

3. Cost

Campervans and finances – a puzzle with missing pieces. Fear not, budget keepers! With Axis, we're not just builders; we're financial wizards. Forget the unnecessary bells and whistles; opt for our Sportwagon layout for cost-effective escapades. It may not be a luxury hotel on wheels, but who needs that when nature's your real home?

4. New Vs. Used

Something else to consider is buying a new vs. used chassis. This is a great place to save. New vans for 2024 are in the $70-80k range vs a used cargo van with some miles on it may be in the $50k range. Here at Axis, we source used vans for our customers and always have new vans to choose from as well. The bottom line, it really depends on budget and what you’re looking for in features.

5. Look at Your Lifestyle

Evaluate your life stage – are you a lone wolf seeking the open road, or is it a family affair with grandkids in tow? Axis has a layout for every chapter of life. Our Sportwagon is perfect for a solo sojourn, while the Revolver is a like a home on wheels for the whole family. Choices abound!

6. Interior and Exterior Options

Accessories, the spice of campervan life. But beware, it's like adding seasoning to a stew – moderation is key. Let me tell you as a van owner myself, this is where it can get really fun, but so overwhelming and costly. Assess your needs, not just your desires. What accessories will make the activities you do easier and more enjoyable?  If you are an avid skier or hiker who likes to take the backroads, a Qlift and aftermarket tires may be just what you need. And no, a heater may not be necessary in the scorching desert, but in the mountains, it's practically a campervan essential.

7. Wants Vs. Needs

We've all seen those extravagant campervans that make you wonder if you've stepped into a time machine. Wants vs. needs, my friends! Sit down, create a list, and resist the urge to turn your van into a spaceship – unless, of course, intergalactic travel is on your bucket list. The beauty of accessorizing is you can always bring your van back to our shop for upgrades!

Conclusion

So, what's the verdict? Why didn't you embrace the campervan life sooner? Join the club of post-purchase enlightenment! Whether it's a tranquil afternoon of fishing or a lively weekend of reminiscing about the good ol' days, campervans make life a whole lot more comfortable and enjoyable. Got questions? Ask away – we're like the campervan sages of the streets. May your wheels roll smoothly and your adventures be plenty! 🚐⚜️
